iOS 17.4: Apple Confirms Surprise U-Turn For Next iPhone Update

The upcoming Apple iPhone update, iOS 17.4, will include new features such as a major iMessage security update and stolen device protection. Apple has reversed their decision to remove support for Progressive Web Apps, which has surprised many. It is important to understand the reasons behind this change and how it will impact developers and users in the future.

Overview of iOS 17.4 update

The iOS 17.4 software update is a continuation of Apple's regular software updates, focusing on general improvements rather than major changes like the release of iOS 17 with the iPhone 15 series. Apple Inc has started introducing third-party applications and alternative marketplaces within the EU.

Users in the European Union can access third-party app marketplaces on the iPhone and set them as their default choice. This new feature enables users in the EU to easily download and install third-party applications that are not accessible on the App Store. Previously, users had to sideload these unavailable apps. One common reason developers choose to sideload their apps is to bypass App Store fees and expand their reach through enhanced marketing options.

In addition to accessing alternate App Stores, users will also have the option to switch from Apple Pay to a third-party payment option. To enable these features, you must activate the option in your settings menu. This allows Apple Inc to provide users with a warning about the potential security risks presented by third-party App Stores and apps.

Within iOS 17.4, there are several minor updates that include enhancements to the stolen device protection feature introduced in iOS 17.3. One notable change is the requirement of a password to alter secure settings when not in your home location. The latest updates include minor security enhancements to iMessage, Apple's support for cloud gaming apps, mentions of upcoming CarPlay changes, and the new feature allowing users to create virtual card numbers within Apple Cash.

The Apple Press Info Announcement

Apple has decided to reinstate home screen web apps in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act, as stated in their latest announcement. Apple's decision to remove web apps was attributed to potential security and privacy concerns related to supporting alternative browser engines that would necessitate new architecture not currently present in iOS.

In our earlier post, we discussed the European Union's consideration of ending support for home screen web apps, which raised concerns about compliance with the Digital Markets Act. However, it appears that Apple has decided to maintain support for these apps in the EU, potentially rendering further investigation unnecessary. These home screen web apps must be developed on webKit and adhere to Apple's security and privacy guidelines for native iOS apps.

The aim is to release support once again for home screen web apps in early march along with iOS 17.4.
